One of the most important things you can do for your new puppy is to supply him with a good supply of toys and chews. If your puppy has his own things to chew on, it will be much easier to teach him to leave your things alone! Do not allow your puppy to play with your things. If you do not want your puppy to chew your clothes or shoes, do not give him rolled up socks to play with. If you do not want your puppy to get into the garbage, do not allow him to chew on milk cartons or aluminum cans. I use a Rubbermaid container as a toy box and when my dogs are puppies, I leave the box at floor height and let them play with any toys they choose. I have never had a problem with my dogs getting into my things (other than food) simply because I never allow them to play with any of my things as puppies. English Cockers are very intelligent and can easily learn which things in your house belong to them and which things are yours. Here are some toy recommendations based on what has worked for us.
Heavy Duty Durable Toys:
These are toys
usually okay for unsupervised play. Very safe and great if you need
to leave your puppy home alone during the day.
Kong
Jolly Ball
Giggler Ball
Kong Biscuit Ball
Holl-ee Roller Balls
Molecuball
Buster Cube
Durable Toys: These toys last a long time with supervised play.
Romp’n Rolls
Donkey Tail
Chuckit Flying Squirrel
Fat Cat Big Mean Kitty Canvas Toy
Clutchball
Fleece Stuffed toys with no eyes, ears etc.
Plush toys are a lot of fun and puppies enjoy them a lot. Please remember that your puppy should be supervised when he plays with plush toys. If pieces of material are ripped off and ingested it could cost you a very large vet bill. Most of the things your puppy chews up and swallows will be puked up or pass through your puppy’s system, but some things can be caught in the intestines and cause your puppy to need serious surgery or even die.
Special Treats: Using these treats can help you get through the teething stage. Only give rawhide chews supervised!!! This is very important as dogs can choke on rawhide. Take any pieces away that are small enough to fit inside of your dog’s mouth.
Merrick Treats (We love almost all of the treats made by Merrick)
Lamb’s Ears
Cow’s Ears
Bully Sticks (Our Personal Favorite)
Nylabone Edibles
Filled Kongs
Raw Soup Bones (I get them 4-6 inches. If they are completely full of bone marrow, I usually scrape some out as it is rich and will give most dogs diarrhea.)
